Roundtables for Parents

October 1, 2021

TO: Pan American Christian Academy Parents

Greetings, and welcome to the first “Head to Heart,“ a monthly message to PACA parent partners in our important mission to nourish hearts, develop minds, and educate for eternity.

The title “Head to Heart” conveys the idea of a sender (the school head) and a target (the child) who is each parent’s ultimate focus and center of responsibility – the heart of the matter. Each month, I will endeavor to communicate on this level to build our partnership deeper.

Communication and Conflict
This September 2021 “H2H” mentions communication, grievances, and conflict. School policy mandates that all parents be informed of PACA complaint procedures. As a Christian school, PACA will respectfully receive criticism and see complaints as an opportunity to improve mission delivery. But even in a Christian school, when at times the response is defensive, we must not make excuses. Rather, we correct our response and grow as a result.

To summarize PACA’s communication policy, we identify two crucial approaches when a conflict arises:

1. Communicate the concern at the most direct level. (Do not skip the teacher and go to the principal.)
a.      Student-to-teacher or parent-to-teacher is the first step. (not student- or parent-to-principal)
b.     If a teacher or administrator does not listen or refuses to acknowledge the need for resolution:
             i.     The student or parent may then connect with the supervisor.
ii.     There must be no reprisal by any employee in response to direct expression of concern. PACA strictly forbids retaliation of any sort for expressing a concern to a teacher or administrator.

2.     Use the following “Levels of Concern” to guide preparation and response.
a.      Pray first for inner peace and then for a peaceful meeting. When ready, request a meeting to express the issue directly to (for example) the teacher (or another PACA employee). PACA employees will respond respectfully but may not be able to offer a solution immediately. The parent may expect a response to be offered in a timely manner thereafter. Another meeting may be needed for the PACA employee to explain the response or for further dialogue.
b.     If the situation is not resolved between the two parties, the PACA employee’s supervisor may be invited to dialogue with the initial two parties. It is always the school’s desire to find common ground and resolve matters of conflict satisfactorily for all (known also as a “win-win”).
c.      The final step for unreconciled matters is for the parent to meet with the Superintendent, who will have been aware of the conflict and who will approach the conflict with a view toward reconciliation.

Parent Roundtables – October
The second topic this month is the parent roundtables that we initiated last semester. We were able to hold only one before school campuses were closed in March-April, 2021. We need a restart and are offering two roundtables this semester.

·       Secondary Parent Roundtable           Thursday, October 14          8:00-10:00 AM      (PACA Gymnasium) (Please click here to register for Oct 14.)

·       PK/Elementary Parent Roundtable       Friday, October 22            8:00-10:00 AM      (PACA Gymnasium) (Please click here to register for Oct 22.)

Items on the agenda will include:
  • Introduction to Board of Trustees philosophy (“ownership linkage” presented by Mr. Fray & Mr. Nelson)
  • Information & dialogue on student learning (impact of 18 months of online/hybrid/in-person learning)
  • Information on potential COVID protocol revisions
  • Real-time survey on parent satisfaction
  • Topics raised by parents in writing in advance (offered via registration form)

This semester’s roundtable events are offered in-person only. The gymnasium provides adequate space to observe distancing precautions in seating. All appropriate safety protocols will be followed.

Sincerely,
John Nelson,
Superintendent

1º de outubro, 2021

AOS: Pais da Pan American Christian Academy

Saudações e bem-vindos ao primeiro “Head to Heart”.

a.      Aluno-ao-professor ou responsável-ao-professor é o primeiro passo. (não aluno- ou pai-ao diretor)

Atenciosamente,
John Nelson,
Superintendente
