Cultivating a love for reading.
Cultivando o amor pela leitura.

We will be starting our Reading contest tomorrow (Friday), September 30 at 8:10 am in the gym.  The first graders will be presenting a play for us.  All are welcome to attend.

Parents are invited to stay and join their children for the morning of activities - art projects, music, games and special stories (Please no younger children – the activities are not geared for them).  Take this time to spend time with your PACA student.

K-5 students will be dismissed before 12:50 p.m. through the school office.  If you would like your child to leave with you, please sign him/her out at the office.   Students are encouraged to leave with their parents after the morning activities/lunch.  If your child is leaving with another student, you need to write the school a note giving your permission for your child to leave with the family you have designated.  Children whose parents are unable to pick them up will have childcare provided until normal dismissal time.

From September 30 - October 28, we are asking students to read every day to establish the habit of reading for pleasure and to strengthen reading skills.

Weekly logs will be sent home the day before the contest starts to keep track of your child’s reading.  Please return the slip on the designated day on the Reading Calendar.  Kindergarten (may be read to) and 1st graders will read for 15 minutes.  2nd and 3rd graders will read for 20 minutes.  4th and 5th graders will read for 25 minutes.  We would like your child to be reading in English and/or Portuguese.   Reading for a book report does count toward the time limit.

Children may have two “free” nights a week if needed.  Your child should circle the date each night he/she reads, parents MUST check and sign the slip of paper, and then your child will turn it in on Friday to the classroom teacher.

Students reading at least 5 times a week will receive a prize, and those who read for all 4 weeks will receive a special reward at the end of the contest.  The biggest reward will be an increased love of reading.

We hope that this is the beginning of a lifelong love of reading for your child, and your child is excited to be "Wild about Books!”
