Heat Wave Recommendations

We want to inform you of some of our campus procedures to help our students stay healthy...
Dear Parents,

Faced with the prediction of high temperatures for today and next week, we have received some guidelines from Escola Segura - our health consultancy - so that we can ensure the well-being of our students during classes. We are recommending that our teachers:

  • Take more class breaks to hydrate our students, including allowing them to refill their water bottles more times a day, especially in early childhood education, as children don't take hydration breaks on their own and can become dehydrated;
  • Try to carry out class activities in cooler environments and alternating locations, especially those that receive direct sunlight. For example, a classroom with a lot of sunlight at certain times of the day should be avoided and students directed to other spaces such as the library.
  • Do not carry out activities in the sun, in places without a roof (such as courts), and without trees or the possibility of shade from 10 am to 4 pm, when the heat is at its hottest.
  • If possible, carry out activities with water, especially in early childhood education, or simply use water sprays for students to cool off a few times a day.
  • Physical education: we recommend taking more breaks for hydration and promoting lighter physical activity, compatible with the temperature of the environment.

We also raised awareness with our teachers to look out for signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion, so that they or the nurse can provide first aid if necessary. Heat exhaustion is an excessive loss of salts (electrolytes) and fluids due to the heat, which results in a decrease in blood volume, causing many symptoms, including fainting, and can develop into heatstroke.

Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion:

Dizziness
Dizziness or feeling of imminent fainting
Weakness
Fatigue
Headache
Blurred vision
Muscle pain
Nausea
Vomiting
Abundant sweating
Heart rate and respiratory rate may become faster.
Blood pressure may be lower.

In all cases, our nurses are available to answer any questions or provide the necessary assistance.

We thank you for your partnership and prayers.

Sincerely,

Leadership
……………

Prezados pais,

  • Realizem mais pausas para hidratação dos alunos, inclusive permitam que eles abasteçam as garrafinhas de água mais vezes ao dia, especialmente na educação infantil, pois as crianças não fazem pausas para hidratação por conta própria e podem desidratar;
  • Procurem realizar atividades em ambientes mais frescos, intercalar os locais, especialmente aqueles que recebem sol diretamente. Por exemplo, uma sala de aula com grande incidência do sol em determinado horário do dia deve ser evitada e os alunos direcionados para outros espaços como a biblioteca;
  • Não realizarem atividades sob o sol, em local sem cobertura (como quadras por exemplo) e sem árvores/possibilidade de sombra das 10h às 16h, horário de maior intensidade do calor;
  • Se possível, realizar atividades com água, especialmente na educação infantil ou simplesmente o uso de borrifadores com água para os alunos se refrescarem algumas vezes ao dia;

Atenciosamente,

Diretoria
