Dear PACA Parents,

What a blessing it was to connect with many of you at Open House last weekend! We ask God to continue to bless PACA’s 2022-23 school year—that through its challenges and excitement opportunities, His faithfulness, protection, and guidance will hover over every community member.

In this first issue for this school year of Superintendent “Head2Heart” messages, I am sharing the text of my thoughts from last Saturday. (A second issue is to be sent next week.)

As I wrote in the final H2H issue of the past school year, in 2022-23 PACA will be exploring more deeply our “Wholeness” student outcome via the theme “Abide in Jesus.”

When I think of whole persons, achievers, stewards, and catalysts, in my mind I substitute two biblical characters that I think embody these Ends: Joseph and Esther. Their lives were examples of wholeness—integrated and singly set apart to God. They accomplished great things, they took care of themselves and others, and they made a difference in their world.

Our ESOs (our Ends) are aligned with our school’s mission: To nurture and develop young people, through quality education rooted in Biblical truth, to impact their world for Christ.

Our mission begins with two verbs and the target before it speaks of the result. We are here to nurture and develop so that students will be prepared to make a difference in their world. We like to say, “This difference-making begins now.”

Let’s take a quick look back at Joseph and Esther. Both were separated from their normal, both were in a sort of exile, one from his family, the other from her homeland. Yet they maintained their wholeness, their identity, and their integrity.
PACA’s vision is to nurture and instruct. Christian education must be delivered by living examples, not merely with words. You as parents, are certainly aware of the effect of good models—for good or for ill.

I believe it is of eternal importance that we model wholeness, and that students develop themselves in biblical balance. Becoming a whole person, which PACA defines as (1) loving God with heart, soul, strength, and mind and (2) loving neighbors as oneself will achieve the end result of (3) a life of integrity.

To simplify— back to the previous example, it means “living as a Joseph or an Esther.”

To bring this home more clearly, we chose the theme “Abiding in Christ” to focus the entire school regularly this year on maintaining a close connection to God, through Jesus Christ our Savior and His Word as our guide. This is PACA’s annual theme and verse. We will certainly aim for the targets of achieving, being stewards, or acting as agents of change for the good. Through the theme of abiding in Christ, we will daily seek God’s help and rely on his strength to guide your child toward discovering faith in Christ, to deepening that faith, and then a fuller expression of his/her God-given identity and gifts.

This is not a small task. It cannot be accomplished casually or accidentally. We are in partnership. Thank you for entrusting PACA in this life-building enterprise—collaboration on behalf of your child.

I am learning that “abiding” takes more effort to define in English than it does in Portuguese. In fact, some Bibles translate the word “remain” instead of “abide.” There are many approaches to making this “abiding” become part of our daily life, but I think the most important aspect is cultivating “a deep desire to remain in Him, and a commitment to obey his commands.”

We lost a campus tree in the wind that hit PACA campus last Wednesday afternoon. When the wind topples a tree, one or two problems typically are revealed: either the tree had internal problems (infested by insects or a fungus so that the tree trunk became hollow or weak, or the lack of depth in its root system. In our lives and that of our students, “Abiding in Christ” can develop the deep resistance to harmful forces and as well depth of character so that we may stand against the winds of temptation and wrong thinking, as well as opposing, ungodly forces.

God was actively preparing Joseph and Esther for many years, but they had important decisions along life’s early pathway, too. So it is with our students; we use themes and classroom conversations over the years of your child’s PACA enrollment to prepare and enable them to make godly decisions for wholeness, both in the moment now, as well as the future.

On behalf of Pan American Christian Academy, thank you for enrolling your child. We value your partnership and prayer support. We hold high expectations that God will accomplish much for His glory in the 2022-2023 PACA school year.

Sincerely,
John Nelson

Sinceramente,

John Nelson
