Dear Pan American Christian Academy Families,

We were all shocked and saddened by the tragic events that transpired in Sapopemba on Monday. It is difficult to comprehend such catastrophic events so close to home. As fellow educators and parents, we feel deeply connected to the children, teachers and staff, families and community who were so devastated by this loss of innocent lives. Our prayers are with all those affected.

Although events like this are infrequent in Brazil, we recognize the impact they can have on each of us—our children, staff, families and friends. Individuals react to situations like this in various ways. We may feel sadness, grief, helplessness, anxiety and anger.

Our counseling team, which includes our campus pastor, has prepared some tips to help you support your children and family at this time:

  • Pray for the victims of this terrible attack and their families the way we would like others to pray for us. It’s in times like these when we need God’s presence and comfort the most. Psalm 145:18 says, “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”
  • Recognize that children may become concerned that something bad will happen to themselves, family or friends. Explain that safety measures are in place and reassure them that you and other adults will take care of them.
  • If your child is not focused on the tragedy, do not dwell on it. Try to avoid having detailed adult conversations regarding the tragedy in front of children. However, be available to answer questions to the best of your ability. Young children may not be able to express themselves verbally. Pay attention to changes in their behavior or social interactions.
  • Limit exposure to media coverage. Images of a disaster or crisis can become overwhelming, especially if watched repetitively. Young children in particular may not be able to distinguish between images on television and their personal reality. Older children may choose to watch the news—be available to discuss what they see and to help put it into perspective.
  • Maintain normal family routines as much as possible. Routine family activities, classes and friends can help children feel more secure.

As always, our top priority is the safety and well-being of each of our students—your children. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. Here are five areas we have worked to improve school safety:

  1. Child Safety Training: Dr. Cristina Meier is conducting teacher and student training on child safety protocol and anti-bullying program.
  2. Surveillance Cameras: we have increased the number of surveillance cameras in strategic locations around the campus to help monitor the activities and campus perimeter.
  3. Access Control and Visitor Management System: we have implemented a name tag policy to help us identify parents, visitors, and service providers. This allows us to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering sensitive areas. All visitors must check in at the front office, helping us monitor who enters and exits the campus.
  4. Regular Security Audits:  we conduct regular security audits to identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the security system, and develop strategies to mitigate these risks with support from external consultants.
  5. Emergency Response Plan: We train all staff on our emergency response plan, including procedures for evacuations, lockdowns, and other emergency situations. This helps our school staff respond quickly and effectively in the event of a crisis.

It’s important for you to know help is available through our school. If you are concerned about your child or feel he or she needs additional support, and you would like to speak with a PACA administrator, please contact the school.

As Christians, we believe deeply in the power of prayer to console, to sustain and to heal, but also to make evident the work that God is calling us to do. We pray that all who have been touched by this violent act receive God's healing and solace.

Sincerely,

Stephen Meier

  • Mantenha rotinas familiares normais, tanto quanto possível.

Atenciosamente,

Stephen Meier
