Digital Citizens

April 19, 2022

Dear Elementary Parents,

The digital world that our children are growing up with and exposed to is incredibly fascinating. There are many tools and resources that both entertain and instruct our children. We see the benefit of many of these tools, but to use technology appropriately, we need to teach the students how to behave while engaging with the digital world.

During the month March, in Computer Class, your child learned about Digital Citizenship. This class was given with a Christian worldview, addressing the positive and negative aspects of technology. We teach them that “… whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

In this unit our students learned to:
1)     Be Responsible:
  • Equipment care – careful use of tablets, phones, and computers.
  • Time management - balancing time online.
  • Footprint - which sites are being visited.
  • Age level – apps, games, and movies within age level.
2)     Be Respectful:
  • Cyberbullying – never be a bully but be an upstander.
  • Feelings – encourage and show kindness online.
  • Tone of Messages – be careful with the words and symbols which may seem to be offensive or aggressive.
  • People’s right – when using someone else´s work, always give credit (Copyright).
3)     Be Safe:
  • Never talk to strangers.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Remember never to share YAPPY (your full name, address, phone, passwords, your plans, and birthday).
  • Always log off from your device.
  • Do not share photos of your friends without their consent.
  • Tell a trusted adult if anything online bothers them.

We, as a school, believe in the partnership of teachers and parents to educate our children. Thinking this way, we have included a few suggested actions you can take to reinforce classroom learning:

1)     Encourage students to use age-appropriate online content.
2)     Reinforce the importance of never supplying personal information and images online.
3)     Teach children to be respectful, an upstander against cyberbullying and to always interact in a way that is kind and honorable.

Finally, during this unit we have been reflecting on the verse “Here, my brothers, are some things I want you to think about. Think about things that are true, honest, right, clean, and pure, things that are lovely, and things that are good to talk about. If they are good, and if they bring praise to God, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8

Prezados Pais do Ensino Fundamental,

  • Sentimentos – encoraje e demonstre bondade online.

Filipenses 4:8

Brenda Stockment – Diretora do Ensino Fundamental.
