Imagine you are in a boring class and you need something to help you focus on studying for your worst final yet. You have already tried everything that you could, except for music. You take out your headphones to tune out the surrounding noise and finally you are getting some productive work done.

I believe that students should be able to listen to music in class when they are studying during their free time. This is because sometimes students might lose focus or motivation so listening to music could keep them going. Some may view music as a distraction but really, music can be a helpful tool to those who use it correctly.

The reason I believe students should be able to listen to music at school is to provide enjoyment and pleasure to activities that may be mundane. For example, whenever you clean, adding some music in the background can make it more fun.

According to a 2014 study on Healthline, “listening to classical music seemed to help older adults perform better on memory and processing tasks. These results suggest certain types of music can help boost memorization abilities and other cognitive functions.”

Likewise, students should be able to do that with their schoolwork such as studying for exams or quizzes. In Physical Science, our teacher, Brian Zeurcher, provided a catchy song about the elements on the periodic table to help us with our alternative assessment. That assessment was based on memorizing the elements on the periodic table. The song he taught us helped many of the students memorize the elements in an efficient way.

With certain classes, teachers will give time to work on their homework and sometimes when students, like myself, see how much homework they have, it can be discouraging. Some teachers might be skeptical because music can in fact be distracting, but if the students have it in the background and not as the main focus, it can be a useful tool.

Music can also be a very helpful tool. Not to mention how there are some songs to help students study, like the periodic table song. It is easy to listen to and it is a good study tool. Or students could even find songs to help them remember the topic or equation.

Music can help students focus and stay on task. A way for music to help students focus is when they put in their earbuds or headphones, they can drown out all the noise from everyone else and pay attention to the work that is in front of them.

In conclusion, I think listening to music can help you focus and process information better and faster. If you view music as a tool I think it could really benefit those who use it wisely. If you use it to help remember key terms for tests or help memorize mathematical equations. This is why I believe that listening to music during free time can help students. Go find your motivational music to help with your studies.
