Physical Education
Aerobic Points Policy Proposal
Objective: To encourage PACA students to participate in weekly aerobic activities throughout the entire school year.
Every semester students will be given three options for maintaining their physical health. The options are:
-
Enroll in physical education class (referred to as PE students) or
-
Participate in one sport (referred to as Sports students) or
-
Enroll in Tuesday / 8th period Aerobics (referred to as Aerobics students)
Rule changes/additions
-
Those participating in softball will be required to obtain aerobic points after their season is over and for the remainder of the semester.
-
Aerobic students are required to report their aerobic points to the PE instructor during the first 10 minutes of 8th period every Tuesday and participate in aerobic activities at the direction of the instructor during that period unless other class/school activities warrant their presence. (The homeroom teacher or administrator will determine excused absences from Tuesday aerobics class participation.)
-
Freshmen will no longer be required to enroll in physical education, however, all students must take both semesters (Semester 1 & 2) of physical education class in order to graduate. (Students may take these two semesters of PE class any time during their four years in high school.)
-
The Physical education graduation requirement of 4 semesters of PE remains the same. Only 2 semesters of sports credit can be counted toward the graduation requirement. Each sport equals .25 credits toward meeting the graduation requirement.
Rules governing the aerobics requirement:
-
Aerobic students are required to obtain points each week and turn them into the aerobics instructor during the first 10 minutes of 8th period every Tuesday of the semester.
-
If an aerobics student does not meet the minimum requirement for aerobic points in a semester they will be required to enroll in a sport or PE in the following semester and enroll in aerobics during that same semester. The aerobics student will receive a pass/fail grade on their official transcript.
-
The PE department will simplify the aerobics point requirement by having only three levels of aerobic activity. A suggested point system is:
Level 15: Maximum Heart Rate 180 – 220 BPM Running, Basketball, Futsal, Soccer, Rope Skipping,
swimming lengths
Level 10: Intensified Heart Rate 140 – 180 BPM Volleyball, Tennis, Skating, swimming, bicycling
Level 5: Amplified Hear Rate 110 – 140 BPM Walking, Lifting weights, bicycling,
Point Requirement
Boys – Average 30 points per week Girls – Average 24 points per week
One hour at level 15 = 15 points
One hour at level 10 = 10 points
One hour at level 5 = 5 points
